To celebrate Ramadan, the Aziz foundation is illuminating Coventry Street, on which our Shake Shack Leicester Square is located, with a spectacular aerial display of 30,000+ glowing LED bulbs. These dazzling lights bring cultural diversity, a sense of community, and support for local businesses all around the city. The lights officially kick off Ramadan on Wednesday, 26th February, and the Eid Switch On will mark the end of the month on Monday, 31st March. So, come for the free fries, stay for the lights, and soak up the festive atmosphere!

What is the Iftar Trail? 

This year, our Leicester Square Shack is proud to be part of London’s first Iftar food trail that features exclusive offers at top Halal-friendly spots during Ramadan.

What inspired you to start Wavey Garms, and how has it evolved over the past 10 years?

I started Wavey Garms as a place for people to share love for vintage and streetwear and it’s turned into so much more. It’s all about fresh talent and fresh ideas within UK culture, sharing insights and creating work we are proud of across visual content and brand activations.

Is working with Shake Shack your first time working with a burger brand? What made this an exciting partnership for Wavey Garms?

My first job was flipping burgers so it has really taken me back to wear my working career began! This is our first partnership with a hospitality brand and I am really grateful for the chance to partner with a global brand in a completely different industry to our usual partnerships.

As a fashion and culture brand, how do you see collaborations like this one shaping the industry and connecting with consumers?

It’s great to see a global brand such as Shake Shack working with grass roots brands like us, embracing local culture and established communities.

What impact do you hope this collaboration will have on the fashion and streetwear community in the UK?

Hopefully it will be seen as a fun celebration of both Shake Shack and Wavey Garms 10 year anniversaries. We hope people love the T-Shirt design as much as we do!

We have collaborated with South-London based illustrator, Michael Parkin, on unique illustrations for the Shack’s exterior. His artwork is inspired by the vibrant bustling street and peaceful common, Michael captured the sense of community and fun that Clapham exudes.

Our Pride Shake is made with strawberry + blackberry frozen custard, topped with a mango and passion fruit blend, whipped cream and rainbow glitter.

As our campaign is based upon the tenets of being inclusive and diverse, we serve up the Pride Shake in a dedicated Pride cup, featuring an updated Pride-themed burger icon consistent with the 2018 redesign of the Pride Flag.

The updated colour palette has the original rainbow + includes the important addition of black and brown to represent people of colour, as well as light pink and light blue to represent the Trans pride flag.

Why Colours Youth Network

Colours Youth Network is a non-profit that uplifts, empowers and supports young black and people of colour who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, intersex (QTIBPOC) aged 16-25, to explore and celebrate who they are through meaningful connections to other young people and a team of experienced QTIBPOC youth workers.

Founded in 2016 by QTIBPOC youth workers on a mission to create work that re-centers young people of colour’s experiences. The team run annual residential, festival, and regional gatherings for QTIBPOC young people and youth workers.

Shake Shack Teams Up with Hoppers to Cook Up One-off Creations

This two-day-only collab features the Lankan Shack, cheeseburger topped with curry-braised short rib, coriander chutney mayo, mustard cream, pickled red onion, fresh coriander and green chilli served in a toasted potato bun.

We’ll also be serving up crinkle-cut fries dusted with curry salt and topped with our Shack cheese sauce, green chillies and curry leaf podi.

There’ll also be Toddy Ale, the love child of India’s Pale Ale and Sri Lanks’s coconut toddy. Unpasteurised ‘Sri Lankan pale ale’ with tons of juicy hops, finished with coconut for a smooth mouth-feel.

Meet the Chef

We sat down with Chef, Koran Gokani to get the scoop on everything, from his story behind the creation of Hoppers to the inspiration behind this collab.

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF & YOUR CAREER

I grew up in Mumbai and moved to England in 2005 to study law at the University of Cambridge, later worked as a Solicitor in London.

Even as a practicing lawyer, my passion for food has never faded, I spent my spare time and weekends in professional kitchens. In 2012, I left my legal career to move back to India to reconnect with Indian food and pursue a career in hospitality.

A year later we opened a Sri Lankan and South Indian restaurant on Frith Street, Soho in 2015. The Hoppers group now spans three restaurants in Soho, Marylebone and Kings Cross.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO OPEN HOPPERS?

Hoppers was the first Sri Lankan restaurant of its kind in Central London.

It takes inspiration from the home cooking and roadside stalls of Sri Lanka and South India, serving Hoppers, Dosas, Kothu, Short Eats, Rice and Roasts.  

WHY PARTNER WITH SHAKE SHACK?

Mark and I have been discussing a collab burger for the past 3 years. As we finally saw this becoming a reality, we wanted to create a burger that represented both our brands but was, at the same time, much more than the sum of its parts.

We think we’ve nailed it and have a burger that’s got everything a beautiful Shack burger should have, along with the spice, curry and punchy flavours you’d expect from a dish at Hoppers.  

 Our fries were inspired by one of my favourite dishes at Hoppers, the chilli cheese dosa, a crisp rice and lentil crepe topped with cheese and green chillies. I’ve eaten my bodyweight in these while testing and shooting the recipe and have no doubt they are the best fries I have ever tasted!

The original concept for Shake Shack began as a hot dog cart in Madison Square Park in 2001, founded by Danny Meyer to fund an art exhibit called “I <3 Taxi.’.

The cart sold hot dogs for three summers until 2004, when Shake Shack was born as a permanent kiosk.

The classic Shack Flat-Top Dog

Inspired by his Midwestern roots, Danny’s quest for the perfect dog led him to Vienna Beef, a Chicago-based hot dog manufacturer founded in 1893. Vienna Beef sent samples to Danny and the tasting crew, and the rest is hot dog history.

The delicious Flat-Top Dogs can be found in all our Shacks.

The most famous of these dogs is our Shack-cago Dog®, a flat-top hot dog with Rick’s Picks Shack relish, onion, pickle, tomato, sport pepper, celery and mustard.
